Boardroom behaviour: The challenge of establishing and sustaining a productive and constructive boardroom culture

Abstract Session - Chris Sayers

Governing bodies are in the spotlight, with more to consider, more responsibility and more scrutiny. Many outside the sector believe university governance is outdated and not good enough. The challenge is there – so what is our response? Highly effective governance needs the right processes, the right information, an appropriate and diverse mix of skills and experience, and arguably most importantly, the right culture.

Getting the culture right requires positive action. Boards have a number of seemingly conflicting functions – holding the executive to account, but also mentoring and developing, agreeing strategy and supporting executives so that they can perform to the best of their ability, but also looking for the gaps where they are falling short. A mature board culture helps to develop an effective and powerful relationship between Board and Executive.

This workshop explores what such a culture looks like - and the nature of the pivotal relationship between the Chair and VC and the Board and the wider executive.

The Governance Conference will take place on 28 November 2019 in London. Find out more.
