Call for interest: membership of the UK Athena Swan Governance Committee

Part of Advance HE's response to the Recommendations from the Independent Review of Athena Swan in the UK.

We recently announced and welcomed members of the new Athena Swan Governance Committee, which has been formed to provide assurance, expert advice and guidance to the Advance HE Board on matters relating to the transformation and ongoing enhancement of the Athena Swan Charter in the UK. We are now seeking expressions of interest for the remaining committee members and our short-life sub-groups.

Advance HE is seeking expressions of interest for outstanding vacancies

Following an open recruitment call, committee members have been appointed to 11 of the 16 positions.

To fill the remaining vacancies, we invite expressions of interest particularly from colleagues with the following experience and expertise:

  • Experience working in professional, technical or operational roles in higher education or research institutions;
  • Academic experience in arts, humanities, social science, business and law disciples;
  • Board-level experience of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) from within and outside the higher education and research sector;
  • Experience of managing peer-review, accreditation or certification processes (e.g. relating to research funding, programme accreditation).

The deadline for expressions of interest is 12:00pm on Monday 2 November 2020. Further information is available in the Terms of Reference, which can be found in the expression of interest pack.

Members will usually be appointed for a three-year term of office, with the possibility of renewal for a further term.

The committee will normally meet three times a year, with digital engagement between the formal meetings. It is expected that this engagement will be higher in the first year, as Advance HE seeks to rapidly advance the transformation of the Athena Swan Charter.

Call for interest: membership of the UK Athena Swan Governance Committee short-life sub-groups

Advance HE is seeking expressions of interest

The recently constituted Athena Swan Governance Committee is currently playing a key role in the development of the Athena Swan Charter in the UK. The transformation of the Charter involves meeting the recommendations of an Independent Review Steering Group, which proposed the development of professional, technical and operational (PTO) departmental awards, as well as better enablement of applicants to address issues relating to the intersectionality of gender with other protected characteristics.

These areas require detailed, expert consideration, to enable the Athena Swan Charter to much better address relevant issues than is achieved through the current version of the framework. The Athena Swan Governance Committee therefore seeks to establish three sub-groups, focussing on:

  • Professional, technical and operational (PTO) staff, including PTO directorate Athena Swan awards;
  • Intersectionality in Athena Swan;
  • Reflecting gender as a spectrum in Athena Swan.

It is important that these sub-groups bring relevant experience and/or academic expertise, and we seek expressions of interest in membership from colleagues across the UK sector.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 12:00pm on Monday 2 November 2020. Further information is available in the Terms of Reference, which can be found in the expression of interest pack.

Membership of the sub-groups will be configured to reflect breadth of experience. They will be primarily convened via email, with virtual meetings organised as directed by the Athena Swan Governance Committee. It is expected that the sub-groups will be disbanded no later than July 2021.
