Athena Swan consultation exercise

Call for expressions of interest in participating in an Athena Swan consultation exercise

Following the independent review of the Athena Swan Charter which reported in Spring 2020, it was recommended that Advance HE put in place a mandatory culture survey to be completed by UK academic departments applying for Athena Swan awards.

To inform the development and implementation of this standardised assessment of departmental culture, Advance HE is preparing to undertake a consultation exercise and invites expressions of interest for participation.

The consultation exercise will take place from the 8th February 2021 to 5th March 2021. During this period, participants will review a draft culture survey and provide feedback to help us finalise our future approach.

How to participate

There are two ways to take part: (A) as a representative of a department or university, and (B) as an individual.

Category A participants will be invited to provide a response on behalf of their academic department or university, consulting with others where relevant to prepare their response.

In this category, we are keen to hear from:

  • Universities of all sizes and focus areas, including small and specialist providers, teaching-intensive universities and research-intensive universities;
  • Universities and academic departments based in all regions of the UK;
  • Academic departments of all sizes, including those with small staffing numbers;
  • Faculties that submit faculty-level Athena Swan applications;
  • Academic departments from all discipline areas, including both STEMM and AHSSBL;
  • Departmental Athena Swan leads, who can provide feedback from a departmental perspective;
  • Institutional Athena Swan leads, who can provide feedback from a central perspective of managing multiple departmental award cycles;
  • Colleagues involved in managing existing surveys within their institution.

Category B participants will be invited to provide an individualised response, drawing on their own experience and expertise.

In this category, we are keen to hear from:

  • Colleagues from both STEMM and AHSSBL departments;
  • Academic and professional, technical and operational (PTO) staff based within academic departments;
  • Departmental Athena Swan leads;
  • Institutional Athena Swan leads;
  • Colleagues involved in managing existing surveys within their institution;
  • Colleagues of all genders;
  • Colleagues from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities.

Please note, the focus of this draft survey is academic departments, so participation from colleagues based in research institutes or PTO directorates is not required at this time. Input from these colleagues will be welcomed in the coming months as the development of research institute and PTO-specific processes progresses.

Colleagues interested in participating in the consultation exercise should complete the below form by 12pm Monday 25th January 2021.

Participants from both categories will be selected to ensure diversity of institutional, departmental and professional contexts. Selection will be confirmed by 1st February 2021.
