Our Governance in Wales event reflects the shared identity and diverse needs of the Welsh HE sector and will be of benefit to Chairs, governors and governance professionals.

Overview

This event is designed to enable Governors and leaders in Welsh higher education to hear from sector experts. This event offers a unique platform to hear from esteemed sector experts, foster meaningful peer networking, and deeply explore the key issues facing both the sector as a whole and individual institutions.

Through insightful keynote presentations and interactive break-out sessions, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in discussions on pressing concerns, address recent developments, and exchange valuable best practices.

Additionally, this event provides a valuable occasion to examine the impact of policy developments on the distinct features of governance within the Welsh higher education landscape. Explore the evolving nature of higher education regulation and its profound consequences for institutions and their governance frameworks.

This is a one day stand alone event.

Aaron leads on Advance HE governance activity through the delivery of our national Governor Development Programme which engages with around 900 governors across the UK on an annual basis. He has extensive experience leading reviews of over 25 governing boards. Aaron was previously President of the National Union of Students (NUS) and also chair of trustees for the organisation.

Kieron Rees
Kieron Rees is Assistant Director for Universities Wales having joined the organisation in 2017. Kieron leads the organisation’s external affairs and policy activity, providing advice to Universities Wales’ governing committee of Vice Chancellors and developing and implementing strategies to effectively influence policy and decision making. Kieron has also previously had responsibility for the Global Wales programme and international policy.

David Sweeney is Professor of Research Policy at the University of Birmingham, Deputy Chair of the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research in Wales and Chair of the Steering Group of the Pandemic Institute in Liverpool.

A former Broadcasting Executive at BBC CymruWales, an award-winning journalist and documentary film-maker, Marian Wyn Jones had a successful career in broadcasting before developing a portfolio career as a Non-Executive Director. She is the first woman to be appointed Chair of Council at Bangor University and Chair of ChUW.

 

Delivery

This event will be delivered virtually through Zoom, with joining instructions sent out by the governance team two weeks before the day of the event.

Along with the joining instructions and links delegates will receive a copy of the programme, with finalised timings, topics, and speakers.

The event will be delivered as as a series of presentations, discussions and panels, with time after each for questions and comments.
