The aim of this paper is to give an update in the progress and to discuss the initial outcomes arising from the HEA project on Problem Based Learning (PBL) in cyber security. The project has been investigating new ways in which cyber security can be taught by giving students the opportunity to actively engage with their learning by utilising PBL approaches. Whilst the traditional approach to teaching cyber security through practical laboratory based activities provides hands-on experience in addressing cyber security problems and designing cyber security solutions it fails to give students the opportunity to fully explore the ill-defined problems prevalent in cyber security. The project’s PBL approach provides a focussed and constructive approach that enhances the students’ ability to evaluate their learning and synthesize and expand their cyber security knowledge and understanding. The ongoing activities and progress for the project the pedagogic underpinnings and the initial outcomes will be presented.
