Athena SWAN Research Institutes pilot report

Research institutes recruit from, and are a key supplier of, talent to the higher education sector, and they have similar work patterns and cultures. As part of the academic community, research institutes have similar structures and women face similar barriers to career progression.

Research institutes approached ECU to discuss extending the charter, and the Royal Society agreed to assign part of their funding contribution to enable a pilot awards round.

Following the success of the pilot, membership was opened to all publicly funded STEMM-focused research institutes in April 2014.
