Engaging students in enhanced academic transitions: a case of two projects using student voice and technology to personalise the experience

This presentation was delivered at the joint HEA/UKCISA Internationalisation of Pedagogy and Curriculum in Higher Education Conference that took place at the University of Warwick on 16th and 17th June 2011.

This presentation delivered by Dr Monika Foster of Edinburgh Napier University draws on several initiatives with international students aiming to enhance their engagement with learning transitions and provide effective and culturally appropriate support. The initiatives have spun over several years and were informed by ongoing research. The research has shown that that there is a need to build relationship with the students and enhance their academic skills before arrival and during study.

The presentation introduces two projects which use student voice and technology to personalise the experience and thus engage students in a meaningful way: online study skills resource SPICE and an e-mentoring scheme both designed to assist international students and students coming as direct entry students from colleges to the University. Both projects are generic in nature and lend themselves to be adapted by colleagues in other contexts. The presentation will provide a brief rationale for the projects and examples of how they work followed by a short evaluation of their effectiveness and discussion about ways of adapting them indifferent contexts.
