Enhancing assessment and achievement through continuous and self-assessment in Computing Science - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

This session will present findings of an intervention in an introductory databases course where interactive student-centred learning was employed but exam results were poor.  The intervention aimed to transform the assessment and improve student engagement retention and attainment by implementing continuous assessment and self-assessment using MCQ quizzes. At the start and end of each quiz students were asked to self-assess their level of understanding by means of a grade. Questions on the material of the course were designed to highlight common areas of misunderstanding. Details on design and implementation will be presented as well as an analysis of the results.
