GeoCapabilities: empowering teachers as subject leaders

GeoCapabilities (www.geocapabilities.org) is an innovative learning and teaching activity to research develop and implement a pioneering approach improving the quality of secondary school teacher education and training in Geography around the world. Based on a Capabilities approach it employs a highly reflective pedagogy with teachers and students. They explore the powerful disciplinary knowledge (PDK) geographical education provides. PDK concerns deep descriptive and explanatory ‘world knowledge’; the development of relational thinking; and thinking about social economic and environmental futures. GeoWeb 2.0 technologies are employed to help those being trained to communicate their perspectives on PDK. A GeoCapabilities platform with four teacher training modules is designed to contribute to teachers’ lifelong learning as curriculum leaders. Promotional activities engage key stakeholders.
