Impact of the process to promote equality and diversity in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008

A review of the impact of the RAE2008 process on different equality groups.

An analysis of the methods adopted by higher education institutions to implement equality guidance in the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE2008), this report reviews the impact of the process on different equality groups.

The review particularly focused on the impact on:

  • women
  • black and minority ethnic staff
  • disabled staff
  • early-career researchers

This qualitative study is based on a sample of 32 institutions and involved document reviews and interviews with senior staff and panel members.

Commissioned by The Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce), this report complements a quantitative study to investigate how ethnicity, gender, disability and age related to the selection of staff for inclusion in the RAE2008. This second publication is available from the Hefce website.

Additional resources

As part of the review, a number of excellent examples of Codes of Practice, training materials and other documents that promoted equality in the RAE2008 process were identified.
