Independent studies in higher education English

This report focuses on students’ experiences of independent studies in higher education (HE) English.

It emerges from further reflections upon a report originally published by the English Subject Centre in 2005 – Four Perspectives on Transition – and it develops initial thinking regarding the purposes and processes of independent study in English. It explores the changing nature and role of students’ subjective expectations and how these shape their approaches and responses to independent learning experiences. It also considers how academic staff might seek to work with such expectations and assumptions in order to construct effective forums for learning in English.
