Management Development Resources MDR7: Caught in the Middle

The Management Development Resources form part of the Advance HE membership benefits. These resources are available for members to download to use within their own institution.

Each Management Development Resource consists of an overall Facilitator Guide plus separate slides and handouts for each of the modules. This structure allows the user to tailor the slides and handouts to their own requirements.

Management Development Resources MDR7: Caught in the Middle

Focusing on the people aspects of management, this resource has six modules that cover everything from the transition to becoming an effective manager while keeping your values intact, to creating a supportive team culture that also recognises diversity and optimises the strengths that difference an bring. Being a manager in higher education can be a tricky balancing act; these materials capture the equilibrium required between effective oversight of team and individual contributions and the need to allow autonomy and ownership to flourish.

The materials draw on a wide range of evidence from business administration and academic writing, covering authors as diverse as Virginia Valian and Robert J Starratt on the advancement of women in academia and ethics in the classroom respectively, to the mindmaps of Tony Buzan and Harvard University’s research on implicit bias.

Like the other Management Development Resources, the materials are designed to be used flexibly by the facilitator, with workable suggestions for adapting and combining different modules to suit the needs of delegates. Focus groups involving development professionals from the former Leadership Foundation’s membership provided valuable piloting and feedback before the resources were finalised, ensuring that they are as relevant and useful as possible.
