performance-based learning and assessment

Refers to a system of learning and assessment that is based on students performing learning- based tasks to demonstrate knowledge and skills. These tasks are student-centred and involve applying information to real-life situations.

Performance-based assessment is conducted by listening to observing and talking with students as they complete these tasks. It is an ongoing process that helps teachers uncover a student's ability to think and reason. Teachers are able to adapt their own practice according to the student performance. Students learn from the assessment process and develop skills of self-evaluation. Performance-based learning and assessment promotes a process of continuous learning and improvement.
