The purpose of professors: professionalism, pressures and performance

This stimulus paper represents a call for greater clarity. It is directed first and foremost at universities – at senior academics and managers who, collectively, are highly influential in shaping institutional professorial promotions and employment policy and practice. This is also aimed at the wider (institutional) academic communities who should have a voice on such issues. There were almost 16,000 full-time professors employed in the UK’s higher education sector during the academic year 2014/15, it is clear that UK universities persist in bestowing the professorial title on what are purported to be the most distinguished and highest achieving of their academic staff.
