Supporting Postgraduates who teach Mathematics and Statistics

On 26 28 and 31 of October the Maths Stats & OR Network ran a series of workshops for postgraduates who teach Mathematics and Statistics. This was the first venture of its kind for the Network initiated by Michael Grove Network Manager. Michael had been concerned that the Network had no specific dedicated provision to support postgraduates who perform an important range of duties in supporting student learning. The conventional induction course for new lecturers although very successful in its own terms was felt not to be sufficiently tailored to the specific needs of postgraduates. Although something of a gamble because it was not clear what the ‘market’ would be for such provision it has in fact paid off handsomely. Each of the workshops was well attended successful and enjoyable; 50 out of the 54 participants who completed the evaluation form rated the event as either valuable or very valuable.
