Supporting a student or member of staff who is transitioning

This guide for human resources staff, managers and staff supporting students outlines the steps to take to support a student or staff member who is transitioning gender (the process of moving from one gender to another, with or without medical intervention).

The step-by-step guide will be useful for any staff member who will need to directly support a trans member of staff or student. It covers initial meetings, developing an action plan, managing the reactions of others and supporting changes in gender presentation.

This resource was developed in response  to requests from higher education institutions, using key information from ECU’s full guidance on supporting trans people in higher education: Trans staff and students in higher education: revised 2010.

This guide is supported by case studies demonstrating good practice where the support and information provided by an institution and the policies and practices in place helped to support the individual through the process of transition:
