Team Based Learning in Mathematics: Increasing Mathematics Confidence for Students at the Transition to Higher Education

This project is part of the 2020 Good Practice Grants, which helped Advance HE members to develop and share innovative practice.

A team from the University of Wolverhampton have been developing a team based learning (TBL) approach to the learning and teaching of mathematics for students at the transition to higher education. This approach has been hugely successful with overwhelmingly positive feedback from students and marked increases in engagement, retention and progression.

As part of this project, the team have developed we a collection of tried and tested mathematics TBL resources available so that colleagues across the further and higher education sectors can experiment with the TBL approach in their own practise.

The resources include a guide to mathematics includes eight specialist TBL sessions which can be delivered in classrooms. There are also short videos to accompany each TBL session where staff offer advice and reflection on aspects of their delivery.
