Using shared reading to promote a sense of community – between 30 000 students 10 000 staff and over 400+ miles - HEA Annual Conference 2017 - Generation TEF: Teaching in the spotlight

Pre-arrival shared reading is currently flavour-of-the-month with many universities actively considering involvement. How to frame the activity can be more contentious – should this be managed within organisational marketing or pedagogic research? Kingston and Edinburgh Napier went for maximum complication establishing a research project into student engagement retention and progression within two establishments 400+ miles apart. We shared bespoke editions of the same book access to the author and all processes and outcomes within our similar but distinct populations. In this session we offer the chance to share the key issues we had to tackle – and reflect on what was learned.
