Ensuring sustainability and readiness for the new normal
Today, the sector faces challenges that were unimaginable just a few months ago. A global pandemic determines the extraordinary context in which we launch Advance HE membership for 2020-21. It will shape our work as we navigate these challenges together.
Our Access, Strategic and Global membership packages provide access to resources, insights, networks and communities, the priorities for which are determined by our members through a series of strategic advisory groups and your ongoing feedback. Whether it is through webinars, thriving online communities via Advance HE Connect, the Good Practice Grant series or toolkits and publications, membership of Advance HE is designed to develop staff and to enhance performance

Covid-19 - Ensuring sustainability and readiness for the new normal
Members-only projects planned for 20-21 will focus on realising the learning from the Covid-19 emergency response and considering how institutions can reshape and redefine themselves in light of the changing world around them.
Connect Benefit Series
The Connect Benefit Series is open to all colleagues at Advance HE member institutions. The Series focusses on monthly themes designed to help our members develop resilience, to help institutions adapt to a new way of ‘business as usual’ within the transformed environment.
Each month there will be a suite of multiple benefit outputs including formats such as webinars, blogs/vlogs, Tweet chats, tool kits and guidance documents.
Tackling structural race inequality in higher education
Activities, discussions, tools and resources to support our members in understanding and addressing structural race inequalities in all aspects of higher education.
The activities in support of this member benefit have been divided into four strands:
- Understanding structural inequality: theory, evidence, data and storytelling
- Honest, brave and open conversations about race
- Decolonising identity
- Meeting the challenge: supporting senior leaders in conversation, change and accountability in addressing race
Student Partnerships in Assessment
Supporting the development of assessment models and practices within higher education institutions.
As the higher education sector continues to navigate through the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, our Student Partnerships in Assessment global member benefit initiative, launching in April and running through to June, aims to support Advance HE member institutions around the globe to engage in conversation about getting started with embedding student partnerships in assessment.
Collaborative Development Fund
Advance HE is dedicated to supporting the development of our members based on sector needs, and provides funding to help enable this. Previously, funding had been in the form of our Small Development Projects (SDPs), which were launched in 2004 and more recently, our Good Practice Grants.
For the 2020-21 member benefit year, funding will be available to our global membership base in the form of our Collaborative Development Fund, which aims to harness the knowledge, experience and innovative capabilities of our members in order to address current challenges within the HE sector.
We invite our colleagues at member institutions to apply for the funding to deliver these projects which will start in February 2021. The application deadline has been extended to 12:00 GMT 29 January 2021.

NEW - Strategic advisory groups

This includes influence over the development of new knowledge and publications shaped to respond to your changing need and exclusive access to the outcomes of this work.
NEW - Digital support
Our international membership consultation prioritised the development of digital services to help connect our global community and support them with key areas such as Fellowship and accreditation. This will complement our existing communities, such as the Accredited Programme Leaders Network, on Advance HE Connect. The following new services for international members are therefore being introduced this year:
- regional webinars, to discuss regional priorities at times suitable for you
- online standardisation exercises, to support those assessing Fellows
- online resources to support those mentoring Fellows improved digital resources to support accredited - programmes, such as help with external moderation.
Fellowship demonstrates commitment to professionalism in teaching and learning in higher education, with over 130,000 Fellows globally. Across four categories, from Associate to Principal, Fellowship provides individuals with recognition of their practice, impact and leadership of teaching and learning, against the descriptors of the Professional Standards Framework (PSF).
Member institutions receive 50% discount on all fees related to direct Fellowship applications for individual members of staff.
In addition our Fellowship Category Tool has been designed to help prospective applicants better understand which category of Fellowship most closely reflects their current practice and to reflect on their ongoing professional development and career aspirations. We also offer extensive resources to support each category of Fellowship application.
"International recognition and being connected to a global community is important. Higher education is global; we have staff and students from all around the world working in our institutions. It is very useful, particularly with early career academics, if their Fellowship has ‘worth’ that transcends institutional and national borders. Our institutions are used to thinking of research in this way, the international recognition of Fellowship helps to better ‘balance’ the relative prestige of research and teaching.”
Professor Martyn Kingsbury Professor of Higher Education, Director of the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship, Imperial College London
As the sector strives to maintain high quality provision for students and develop resilience for an uncertain future, now more than ever it is vital to develop a rich insight and understanding of the student view on engagement and their experience.
