Student success is at the heart of high-quality, impactful higher education. As student needs and regulatory expectations change, our members are adapting to secure the best outcomes for their learners.
It’s vital this work is both effective and efficient – helping your institution develop the right strategies, interventions and evaluation to protect and enhance student outcomes at a key time of change in higher education.
This theme will:
- help you protect the quality of the student experience now, in the context of reducing resources, significant change in your operations and increasing regulatory burden
- build on our work on the Student Success Frameworks and cover topics such as retention, attainment and graduate outcomes through a contemporary lens
- provide a range of practical, evidence-based resources designed to support success and resilience for students and the change required in member institutions.
We’ll take a holistic approach to securing outcomes – from course design to student support – helping you to respond to increasingly complex needs within constrained resources.
Audience
This theme will be beneficial to an array of HE professionals, from those working directly with students, to those with leadership responsibilities for student success, including Course Leaders, Deans, Directors, Vice Chancellors and Governors.
Key features and outputs
Securing student outcomes: showcasing institutional impact
This output will highlight how our members have delivered for their students - what’s mattered to securing sustainable change, how this links to effective practice across HE and what teams have learned about how to manage change and enhancement in their institution, from strategic approach to implementation.
We’ll focus on two key areas which matter to students and our members, and which demonstrate the value of higher education:
- Improving retention and success
- Enhancing Graduate Outcomes
Harnessing AI to Enhance Employability - A Screencast Series
Through this work, we will bring advice and perspectives from those working outside of HE on how AI is changing the world of employability, enterprise and entrepreneurship. These changes are happening now, and this work has the focus of helping your institution understand, make sense of and respond to the implications for your graduates.
Outputs from this project include:
- Four screencasts from presenters discussing the role of AI in the future of graduate-level education and employment
- A follow-up blog post to reflect on learnings and actions.
Student service redesign
Recognising the critical importance of excellent student support, this strand will explore new models for organising and delivering services, investigate innovative approaches, and help you to improve efficiency in targeting interventions and coordinating support.
By working with key partners in academic support, student services, disability support and mental health and wellbeing provision, this output will be a valuable update of Advance HE’s Student Needs Framework.
Outputs from this project include:
- Practical user guide
- 3 dissemination events:

Collaborative Development Fund 2024-25
The Collaborative Development Fund is a yearly scheme that offers all Advance HE members the opportunity to apply for grant funding to undertake work on important sector needs and goals. In 2024-2025 we are offering grants of between £10,000 and £15,000 (inclusive of VAT).
As student needs and regulatory expectations change, institutions need to be able to adapt to secure the best outcomes for their learners and provide a transformational learning experience. We are interested in creating practical, evidence-based resources designed to support the success and resilience of students and the change required in member institutions.
