This part of the Connect Benefit Series - Student Success project aims to explore assessment and feedback practices in higher education from multiple perspectives.
Assessment and feedback review - introductory blog
This key area of focus in the Student Success series centres on the upcoming literature review ‘Impacts of Higher Education Assessment and Feedback Policy and Practice on Students: A Review of the Literature 2016-2021’, conducted by Professor Kathleen M. Quinlan and Dr Edd Pitt of the University of Kent.
In this introductory blog, Professor Quinlan and Dr Pitt reveal the process behind their research.

Download the literature review
The review provides an insight into the literature, recognising that assessment and feedback practices are amongst the most powerful levers educators have for improving student learning. The authors advocate a broad conception of assessment and feedback to centre student learning and prompt a rethinking of traditional views of assessment and feedback, providing several recommendations for practitioners, policy makers and researchers.
Events and outputs include a webinar, podcasts and interactive summits.

Assessment and feedback podcast 1: Assessment
In the first of two podcasts previewing the findings of their literature review on assessment and feedback, the University of Kent's Edd Pitt and Kathleen M. Quinlan explain their chosen definition of assessment, and discuss assessment for learning, high-impact practices, attainment gaps, and the importance of making assessment more authentic. They also discuss the synergies with the feedback side of the review.

Assessment and feedback podcast 2: Feedback
In the second of two podcasts previewing the findings of their literature review on assessment and feedback, the University of Kent's Edd Pitt and Kathleen M. Quinlan discuss the feedback side of the literature review. They discuss the culture shift that is needing in regards to feedback, with the formative opportunities that can be created by the educator and thinking much more on programme terms rather than module by module.

Assessment and feedback webinar
This webinar took place on 9 June, with Professor Kathleen M. Quinlan and Dr Edd Pitt of the University of Kent speaking to their recently commissioned literature review: ‘Impacts of Higher Education Assessment and Feedback Policy and Practice on Students: A Review of the Literature 2016-2021’. The webinar includes a general overview of the research, a spotlight on key findings, and a Q&A session on the review, thematic area and broader findings.

Assessment and feedback summit
With consideration to the upcoming literature review on Assessment and Feedback, this summit will offer colleagues an interactive opportunity to reflect on this key and topical thematic area.
The summit is an interactive event specifically designed to gather colleagues’ views and perceptions of the review, as well as providing a platform to discuss the interconnection between Advance HE’s framework components, ensuring any future iteration of the Student Success Framework Series is not considered in isolation.
All colleagues at Advance HE member institutions can attend this summit free of charge; please share this webpage with your colleagues. In order to accommodate as many colleagues as possible, the same summit will take place at the following times:
Monday 20 June 10.00 BST – book here
Wednesday 29 June 07.00 BST - book here
