The Tertiary Sector Evolution project is an Advance HE member benefit for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This project aims to focus on the key contemporary sector priority: Tertiary Sector Evolution, sometimes referred to as third-level, post-secondary or post-compulsory education.
Bringing together colleges, small specialist institutions, Institutes of Technology, Universities and relevant sector bodies to consider key issues relating to the evolution of the tertiary sector in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The project will convene a space for cross sector engagement and dialogue including the sharing of current tertiary practices, what has worked from recent sector reforms and looking at case studies from further afield.
The project will develop in an iterative manner, informed initially by a small Sandpit event for senior leaders and sector representatives that will identify key priorities for the project over the following months. Complemented by a Summary Scoping Report on Tertiary Sector Evolution which will summarise drivers for change, similarities and differences across the nations including a glossary of comparable terms.

The Tertiary Sector Evolution project will explore the following:
- Why tertiary sector evolution matters, and who it matters to.
- What are the critical areas/themes that need to be addressed around tertiary sector evolution and what can we learn from each other.
- What are the drivers for change and different contexts in each country?
- What are the similarities or differences that exist between different stakeholders and systems in those taking part in the project and more widely internationally?
- What are the priorities for change and what support, information or insights do we need?

This Sandpit event in December convened and facilitated a forward looking solutions base, drawing on both the distinctive and common recent experiences of institutions and considered possible futures for their tertiary education sectors.
This event was for our senior contacts in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
