30 years of NETworking

The NET Conference is the leading international conference for networking in healthcare education. Featuring leading speakers and educators from the sector, workshops, presentations and opportunities to network with presenters and delegates, NET2018 is the complete conference experience for healthcare educators. Dr Elisabeth Clark is part of the NET Conference committee.

For nearly three decades, I have had an annual ‘appointment’ with NET – the international networking conference for healthcare educators. Every year I meet ‘old’ friends from many countries across the world who return year after year, and also look forward to seeing some new colleagues.

The range of delegates brings huge richness and diversity to the discussion and debate throughout the conference. But what we all share is a passion for healthcare education. Students also join us, bringing their ‘coal face’ perspective. I remember two students in one of my sessions and wow did they challenge some of our thinking as educators. I doubt that anyone will have forgotten their input to the discussion which carried on into the tea break.

Over the three days of the conference, there are two keynote papers, presentations from a diverse range of healthcare educators, practitioners and students, poster presentations, symposia and workshops, as well as plenty of opportunities to network, which is what the NET conference is all about. We know that over the years many collaborative projects – both national and international – have been ‘conceived’ at the conference.

The NET conference is designed to stimulate and feed our intellectual curiosity and, hopefully, remind us of the rewards of our jobs that are ultimately about improving patient/service user experience and care. Amid all the busyness and pressures of our working lives, it is all too easy to forget why we do what we do, and the importance of what we do.

A couple of years ago, a delegate told me that she’d arrived feeling jaded and had left feeling inspired and motivated. This sentiment was echoed by someone else who said: “This conference is extremely motivating, I can bring about change through ideas I’ve gained. This is one of the best conferences I’ve ever attended.”

In short, NET is about recharging our batteries before the start of the new academic session. We look forward to welcoming you at the beginning of September.
