40 staff from 16 Lithuanian universities attended a Transforming Teaching session at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) in Lithuania run by Advance HE. The session was delivered by Advance HE’s Assistant Director of Knowledge, Innovation and Delivery Kathy Wright and Head of Membership (International) Ian Hall.

The attendees offered insight into discussion topics including the attributes of a good teacher and the changing needs of students. Global issues in higher education and key challenges facing universities were also debated – globalisation, emigration, funding and technological and political issues. Advance HE’s work with the sector identifying current key strategic issues in learning and teaching through postgraduate and undergraduate surveys provided a solid foundation to discuss global challenges.

Reflecting on the session, Kathy Wright commented

“The challenges currently facing Lithuania are meeting the needs of a global workforce. My experience at VGTU evidenced that developing teaching is a key priority in achieving this.”

Ian and Kathy used interactive methods to involve the participants, which received a positive reception.  Attendees engaged in the interactive elements of the day which included dialogue sheets, polls, a quiz and word clouds to prompt an exchange of ideas.

Ian Hall said

“I’m delighted with the outcome of the session. It’s clear that Teaching and Learning is of high importance in Lithuania and we would be delighted to carry out further work in the region.”
