Academic professional apprenticeship numbers gathering pace

23 Dec 2019 | Advance HE Advance HE’s work’s as a registered End Point Assessment Organisation for the Level 7 Academic Professional Apprenticeship is now underway.

The Level 7 Academic Professional Apprenticeship (L7 APA) is a new standard intended to develop full competency in early career academics’ role as practitioners. The scheme is a route for higher education providers in England to access the Apprenticeship Levy to support the academic’s development cost. Advance HE provide EPA for both the teaching and research L7 APA routes, the latter in partnership with Vitae. A significant number of academics have now begun their apprenticeships.

The apprenticeship requires an independent End Point Assessment (EPA) and at present, Advance HE is the only registered End Point Assessment Organisation which is up and running for the Level 7 Academic Professional Apprenticeship.

Advance HE’s newly appointed Head of Academic Apprenticeships and Excellence Award, Dr Nicola Watchman Smith, said, “We’re really excited this work has begun and we’re already working with a number of institutions under the scheme.

“We anticipate the very first academic will be successfully through the scheme in January and the numbers for assessment in the early spring are already around 60 staff. It’s good to see early momentum building.”
