Advance HE welcomes progress on the enhancement of external examining practice

22 Feb 2022 | Advance HE Update on the progress of the review of external examining practice undertaken by the QAA alongside Universities UK and GuildHE

Alison Johns, Chief Executive of Advance HE, has welcomed the update on the progress of the review of external examining practice undertaken by the QAA alongside Universities UK and GuildHE.

Alison Johns  said, “External Examiners are a key element in maintaining academic standards in UK higher education. It is very important that the role is better understood and that institutional arrangements for the management of external examiners are more consistent. This is not just a question of better induction of incoming externals, but of ensuring that they are assessment literate and confident in their advisory role.”

Under the aegis of the Degree Standards project (2016-21) managed by the Office for Students on behalf of the devolved nations, Advance HE has developed a highly successful professional development course (PDC) for external examiners.

So far, over 4000 academics have undertaken the course with 48 institutions committing to the continued roll-out of the course across their institution.

The PDC is also available to open enrolment. Find out more about our upcoming courses.
