Rapid advancements in technology, shifting student demographics, and increasing economic pressures have prompted a radical rethinking of traditional assessment models. While the Framework for Enhancing Assessment in Higher Education provides essential principles for effective and inclusive assessment and feedback, many academics, curriculum developers and teaching professionals we work with through programmes, events or consultancy often ask, ‘what does that look like in practice?’
This series of case studies, emanating from the presentations and workshops delivered at the Advance HE Assessment and Feedback Symposium 2023, showcases innovative and impactful approaches which have been implemented in institutions across the sector to enhance assessment and feedback practices.
The collection includes examples of assessment and feedback design for the digital age, authentic assessment, and strategies to promote assessment literacy and engagement with assessment and feedback. The developments aim to improve student experience and outcomes, but also to address broader sector challenges of student retention, attainment gaps, inclusivity, and the need to ensure graduates are prepared for the demands of the 21st-century workforce.
The publication provides valuable insight into how institutions are navigating the complexities of assessment in the modern educational landscape, with each case study detailing an initiative that has been tested and refined within a specific institutional context. The series provides a wealth of practical examples and ideas for colleagues to reflect on and to spark discussion on how similar initiatives might be implemented within their own work. This publication builds on, and adds to the examples and case studies provided in the Enhancing Assessment: A Practitioner Guide published in May 2024, and supports Advance HE’s commitment to sharing effective learning, teaching and assessment practice across the sector, contributing to the ongoing conversation about how assessment can be used as a powerful catalyst for change. We hope you enjoy it.
