New Athena Swan Ireland institutional and departmental awards conferred

31 Mar 2022 | Advance HE 15 Bronze awards conferred including Bronze institutional awards for Carlow College, St Patrick’s and TU Dublin.

Fifteen awards are conferred in the latest assessment round for Athena Swan Ireland, with two new institutional awards taking the total number of awards in Ireland to 98 (20 institutions, 78 departments).

Carlow College, St Patrick’s achieved a Bronze award and was commended for a number of important positive changes in the College, including the appointment of a female Vice-President, an improved percentage of women in the higher pay scale bracket and gender balance on the Board of Management.

TU Dublin also achieved Bronze, becoming the first Technological University to achieve an Athena Swan award, and within three years of establishment. The application notes a range of good practice and positive initiatives including gender parity on the Governing Body, Academic Council and at Director level. TU Dublin was also commended for the Intersectionality and Gender Equality training programme led by the institution in the European Technological Universities Consortium.

Multiple discipline areas are recognised in awards achieved in this round, including various STEMM departments, Arts and Humanities, as well as in Business and Law.

Sarah Fink, Head of Athena Swan Ireland (Acting), said, “These awards demonstrate a shared commitment to improving gender equality for those working and studying in higher education. We look forward to supporting them as they progress their action plans across their institutions and departments.”

“Advancing gender equality across Higher and Further Education continues to be a priority for my department. I would like to extend my congratulations in particular to Carlow College, St Patrick’s and TU Dublin for both their recent achievements and future plans to enhance their equality work.”

Simon Harris TD, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science

“We know that achieving an Athena Swan Ireland award is a significant amount of work. I am delighted to see recognition of the dedication from across the sector to addressing gender inequalities and driving cultural change.”
