Second cohort announced of ‘Success on the board’

12 May 2022 | Advance HE Wellcome and Advance HE announce a second cohort of the fully-funded development programme ‘Success on the board: unlocking the power of underrepresented voices in research’.

Wellcome and Advance HE are pleased to announce the launch of a second cohort of the fully-funded development programme ‘Success on the board: unlocking the power of underrepresented voices in research’.

This years’ cohort will comprise ten places open to researchers and professional research services staff from underrepresented groups in UK universities and research institutes. The programme aims to support participants to explore the membership of committees and boards of research institutions, universities, and other organisations relevant to the sector, such as charities, hospitals, funders and research organisations.

Dr Diego Baptista, Head of Research and Funding Equity at Wellcome, said, “We’re really happy to support Success on the board for a second year. It’s great to see Wellcome’s continued enthusiasm for influencing who participates in higher education governing bodies and boards – an important piece of the larger puzzle to help get inclusion work as a larger priority for the research sector.”

Victoria Holbrook, Advance HE Assistant Director, Governance, said: “I am delighted that we are working with Wellcome for a second cohort in this vital area for effective governance. It is now almost universally recognised that diversity at any level in an organisation, including – perhaps especially – the board, leads to positive change and more effective organisations, and a diverse mindset in the boardroom and in committees can also help to pre-empt and solve issues before they arise.”

In November 2021, Advance HE launched the Board Diversity and Inclusion Toolkit, developed in collaboration with the University of Gloucestershire and Perrett Laver. Find out more here.
