As UK higher education faces a convergence of complex challenges – from financial constraints and challenges to student recruitment, regulatory scrutiny on free speech and inclusion, rising stakeholder expectations, geopolitical tensions and a backlash against EDI – there is a growing imperative to reimagine the role of inclusion in our institutions.
In this shifting landscape, reflection and innovation are essential. Advance HE remains unequivocally committed to inclusion, and to supporting members to respond proactively to these challenges. This includes our work to align inclusion and free speech and academic freedom, and in understanding and responding to the recent Supreme Court judgment.
Our new Inclusive Institutions Framework (IIF) reflects this commitment to proactive innovation. Designed to be strategic, flexible, and consultative, the IIF moves beyond traditional siloes – more efficiently bridging staff and student agendas, access and participation, and work on individual protected characteristics. It also expands the scope of inclusion to encompass socioeconomic status and freedom of speech, supporting a framework of rights relevant to everyone in our institutions.
In developing this work with the sector, we want to engage leading experts to share insights and perspectives. In this thought-provoking article, Professor Nicola Dandridge examines the future of EDI in higher education. With a unique background as former Chief Executive of the Office for Students, Universities UK, and the Equality Challenge Unit, Professor Dandridge challenges senior leaders to define what ‘good’ looks like in inclusion – and to lead from the front in setting institutional vision, priorities, and impact.
