Reader in Education and Literacies
Dr Candice Satchwell is a Reader in Education and Literacies at the University of Central Lancashire. She was a Lecturer in English in Further Education before studying for a PhD in Literacy Education. She then worked in two concurrent part-time jobs: as lecturer and programme leader for an English degree in a college; and as senior researcher at Lancaster University, working on a series of research projects relating to education and literacy. Candice is Principal Investigator on Stories to Connect, a large AHRC-funded project (2015-2017) Impact of work Her teaching has had an impact on numerous students lives, many of them coming into Higher Education through unconventional routes. By facilitating the building of students confidence and knowledge bases, she has helped the development of students and colleagues careers in sometimes unexpected ways. Her research in FE students and homeless adults literacies has had an impact on teacher training in Further and Higher Education by encouraging teaching to take account of the sometimes hidden skills of students. As Course Leader for the Masters and Doctorate in Education she is responsible for the professional development of numerous staff in educational contexts, particularly higher education, and thereby influence students experience through research about learning and teaching. Her current research and associated teaching is adding to knowledge of participatory research with community groups and university students and staff, and the possibilities of disseminating research through new digital means of communication. Plans for the future Candice intends to continue linking teaching with research, drawing together students and staff from different disciplines to work on community-based research. For example, currently she is supervising students in Creative Writing and Animation as they work to co-create stories with community-based research participants. She intends to enhance opportunities for students learning with peers and tutors on her postgraduate courses by implementing writing workshops aimed at co-production of texts. She will take an enhanced understanding of collaborative research methods and digital literacies in the community into her postgraduate supervision and future research.
