Dr Cheri Logan

National Teaching Fellow 2009 Cheri Logan was born in Cumbria, went to school in Carlisle and then studied at the Universities of Lancaster and Manchester. She began her teaching career in higher and further education in Carlisle, subsequently working long-term for Cumbria Institute of the Arts and the Open University. Originally a lecturer in theory areas of Creative Arts disciplines, Cheri taught these subjects for many years at Cumbria Institute of the Arts. Former students describe how she provided them with "a treasure trove of concepts that made her classes"... "the most interesting and challenging experiences of my degree", with "inspiring and uplifting teaching". As her expertise and innovations in learning and teaching progressed, Cheri became more involved in helping colleagues to achieve similar results. She was increasingly called on to adopt a more strategic role, becoming the Institutes Learning and Teaching Co-ordinator in 2004. In this role Cheri ensured that the needs of learners and teachers were fully acknowledged in institutional planning and systems, work that she continues in the University of Cumbria. Cheri undertook a research degree with the Open University, gaining a Doctorate in Education in 2005. She continues to develop a national and international profile for her research and educational development work, which is recognized for its "importance and significance" (Professor R. McCormick, Open University) and for having "learning and teaching, at the core" (Professor John Field, Stirling University). Her current role within the University of Cumbria's Centre for the Development of Learning and Teaching involves Cheri in developing strategies for high quality educational delivery through e-learning. This work is enabling Cheri to realise her ambitions in new ways, and she wholeheartedly shares her University's key educational aim of opening doors and transforming lives.
