National Teaching Fellow 2015 Institution at time of award: University of Leeds Professor Nigel Lockett is passionate about enterprise and the positive role it can play in economic growth and social change. His current leadership roles at at Lancaster University enable enable him to build and support a community of academics, professionals, entrepreneurs and alumni committed to providing exceptional enterprise opportunities to students and graduates. An experienced entrepreneur remarked: "Nigel is a rare individual. A wonderful mix of cerebral academic, successful businessman, imaginative entrepreneur and all this mixed in with a very high standard of ethics, genuinely caring for people around him and the wider world." Nigel is a member of the Small Business Charter management board and a Fellow and past President of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. A senior academic, experienced manager, entrepreneur and community leader, he has more than 25 years experience as a company director with a track record in managing start-up, joint venture and social enterprises. Before joining Lancaster University Nigel previously worked at Leeds, Bradford and Brunel universities and has successfully delivered innovative programmes in enterprise and entrepreneurship including the Starting a Business MOOC. He has also worked with many small business leaders on the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses initiative and executives of global enterprises. A recent undergraduate student commented:  "Nigel is a very knowledgeable, approachable and professional person. He also is an expert in the field of Entrepreneurship. It was a pleasure to be taught by him because he delivered the content in a way which kept the whole class engaged, focused and interested." Nigel's current research interests include academic entrepreneurship, the role of social capital in entrepreneurial learning and the use of social customer relationship management by small businesses. He is the co-author of a major textbook Exploring Entrepreneurship and is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Foundation, a charity committed to ending social exclusion across the north of England.
