Baroness Afshar OBE

Haleh Afshar is emeritus professor of politics at the University of York and serves as a crossbench peer in the House of Lords and a fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

She is also the visiting professor of Islamic Law at the Faculté Internationale de Droit Comparée at Strasbourg. Afshar is honorary President of UK Muslim Women’s Network and selected as one of the top 20 Muslim women in power by the Equalities Commission in 2009. She served as a member of the Women’s National Commission 1999-2010. In 2012 she took part in the All Party Parliamentary Group on Race and Community inquiry on the unemployment of Black, Bangladeshi and Pakistani women. Afshar has written two and co-authored, edited and co-edited 15 books on questions relating to women and development; Islam and feminisms and Iran.
