Dr Katie Szkornik
Dr Katie Szkornik is currently Dean of Education in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, and Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at Keele University. Katie is a strong advocate of encouraging and inspiring females to undertake and progress careers in the sciences, and to take on leadership roles in academia. She has led work at departmental, Faculty and University-level relating to equality and diversity including leading three departmental-level Athena SWAN submissions and an institutional-level submission in 2014. She has also acted as a ‘critical friend’ for other departments and institutions applying for Athena SWAN awards.
Katie has been a panellist for the Athena SWAN awards scheme since 2012 and has acted as a panel Chair since 2015. In this time, she has assessed a significant number of Athena SWAN submissions, at all levels of award and across a diverse range of institutions, research institutes, and departments. Katie is currently undertaking a 3-year research fellowship, associated with Keele University’s Access and Participation Plan, which is investigating access, progression and attainment differences for students through different ‘lenses’ including gender, ethnicity and disability.
