John has had a long and varied career in six universities including Goldsmiths, Imperial College and the LSE. For twenty years he was successively Secretary and Registrar at Royal Holloway and the University of Southampton where, in addition to being unitary head of professional services, he was Secretary to the Council of each university in turn. Since retiring from full time work, John has undertaken consultancy with more than twenty-five universities in the UK and Ireland and this work has particularly involved governance reviews. He has acted as external adviser for reviews at some twenty universities and is among the most experienced authorities on university governance in the UK. The universities he has reviewed cover six in the Russell Group (including University of Glasgow, University of Warwick, University of Exeter and most recently The University of Manchester) and a very wide range of other universities including Abertay University, University of Chichester, Leeds Beckett University and Anglia Ruskin University. Most recently he has worked with King's College London on the review of its academic governance.
