Working with the institution as a whole and with its twenty-two schools and departments, Michael coordinates and supports the implementation of the Athena Swan Charter at the University of Surrey.
Michael is acutely aware of the challenges of carrying out an Athena Swan application, and, in particular the amount of work involved. Yet, he wholeheartedly believes that it can bring about positive and sustainable changes to gender equality within the higher education and research sectors.
He has been an Athena Swan panellist and chair for a number of years and has gained very valuable insights in to the process throughout this time. He is delighted to be part of the next stage of Athena Swan’s evolution.
In addition to his work on Athena Swan, Michael is currently working on the University of Surrey’s Race Equality Charter Mark submission and leads on their annual Stonewall Workplace Equality Index submissions. He believes that an intersectional approach to equality is essential to bringing true and lasting change to the higher education sector.
