Scott has been working in different roles in the broad area of equality, diversity and inclusion for over 30 years. First, through a research interest in the intersections between gender, class and ethnicity. Then in his learning and teaching activity in the sociology of sport, leisure and education. Later in leadership and advocacy for gender equality (especially) at senior management level. Most recently through his engagement as an Athena Swan Panellist and Panel Chair, and as a member of the Research Excellence Framework 2021 Equality and Diversity Advisory Panel.
He has worked in medium-sized modern UK universities with an offer that includes the biomedical sciences, and now leads the academic portfolio at a smaller provider with a history in Initial Teacher Education and Training. It has an expanding dossier in the humanities and the social sciences.
Scott has seen the impact that Athena Swan can have as an instrument of change but is aware of the challenges faced by applicants throughout application processes – especially for smaller universities. He is looking forward to contributing to the work of the Athena Swan Charter through his new appointment as a panellist Chair.
