Dr Joan O' Mahony

Joan is Director of Academic Development at Bloomsbury Institute. Previously she was Senior Adviser for Teaching & Learning at Advance HE and before that at Higher Education Academy where she led the HEA’s work on student retention.

Joan brings expertise to the group through national initiatives to improve the student experience and outcomes; this included spearheading Advance HE’s sector-wide programmes to embed mental wellbeing in the curriculum.

Joan is co-author (2021) Student mental health and wellbeing: Insights from higher education providers and sector experts, for the Department for Education; (2019) Understanding and overcoming the challenges of targeting students from under-represented and disadvantaged ethnic backgrounds, for the Office for Students; and co-author (2017) Supporting student success: strategies for institutional change: What Works? Student Retention & Success programme, for the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Joan is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and currently a member of the steering group for the OFS funded six-HEI Positive Digital Practices Project.
