Professor Richard Bourne

Richard is a theologian and ethicist with expertise across political ethics and theological pedagogies, He joined York St John University as Head of Department of Theology and Religious Studies in 2015, having previously worked at the University of Cumbria and Leeds Trinity University.

Richard is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. In addition to his role as Head of School of Humanities, Richard leads a variety of strategic projects on learning, teaching, and student experience, including the creation of strategy, assessment and feedback, enhancing student partnership, and embedding employability and enterprise in the curriculum. 

Since 2018 Richard has spearheaded York St John’s effort in racial equality, decolonisation, inclusion and intercultural diversity. He is co-chair of York St John’s Race Equality Charter Self-Assessment Team. He represents the University on the York Human Right City Network. He oversees activities as a University of Sanctuary. Richard also serves on the Advance HE Strategic Advisory Group for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
