Professor Steve Rothberg

Prof Steve Rothberg joined Manchester Metropolitan University in 2023 as Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. From 1990-2022, he was at Loughborough University where his research in noise and vibration measurement and analysis attracted individual awards from the National Physical Laboratory and the Society of Experimental Mechanics, and contributed to Loughborough’s Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Optical Engineering (2000) and High-Value Manufacturing (2014).

From 2001-7, Steve was Head of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering before becoming Dean of the Faculty of Engineering in 2007. It was as Dean that Steve led Loughborough’s first Athena Swan institutional award submission and he continued as the institutional lead from more than decade, securing 14 awards. He became Pro Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise) in 2011 and then Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) in 2015, introducing a transformative research framework to drive research excellence and ambition before delivering Loughborough’s 2021 REF submission.

His recent external roles have included membership on the Main Board at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult), the PVCs’ Executive Management Group of Midlands Innovation (the grouping of the Midlands 8 research-intensive universities), the JISC Research Strategy Forum and the EPSRC Capital Infrastructure Strategic Advisory Team. He was appointed as an Athena Swan panel chair in 2022.
