Overview

There has been a significant growth in the uptake of Fellowship in recent years and there are now more than 135,000 people across the world who have been awarded a category of Fellowship. The majority have done so via an accredited course or programme within an institution. There is a growing evidence base demonstrating the value of Fellowship to individuals, but what is the impact of institutional accreditation to award Fellowship on the institution itself, and on its policies, culture and practices? In this webinar an international team of researchers, led by Dr Lucy Spowart of the University of Plymouth share the findings of a recent research project commissioned by Advance HE and conducted between February and August 2020.

At the start of the project 172 institutions were accredited against the UKPSF. Of these, 23 were outside the UK. This international growth in interest and institutional engagement to the point of accreditation reflects a growing global appetite for standards of higher education (HE) teaching and learning against which individuals can be recognised.

This webinar details the research methods and findings from three strands of activity:

  • A desk-based review of published literature and a sample of accreditation documentation;
  • An online survey to capture large-scale data on the perceived and actual impacts of institutional accreditation internationally;
  • 11 international case studies based on semi-structured qualitative interviews with educational leaders, staff management representatives and students.

The project team will highlight the many significant impacts, as well as identifying some of the institutional challenges of accreditation. The discussion will include suggestions for future research in this area.

Delegates will be invited to submit questions ahead of the webinar.
