We know that, regardless of discipline, developing graduates for successful trajectories beyond university is of critical importance. Enabling our graduates to have a positive impact, whether that be through creating value that is economic, social, cultural, or environmental – or indeed a mixture of each, is the embodiment of this success.

The event, by way of oral presentations and workshops, will provide a space to discuss and share latest practices in embedding employability among a network of peers. The symposium will focus on employability initiatives that address the following themes:

  • Sustainable development;
  • Inclusivity and equitable opportunities;
  • Interdisciplinary approaches;
  • Global Citizenship;
  • Co-design and partnership with students.

Symposium aims

  • To provide an open and supportive environment within which to share and discuss contemporary practice and initiatives in employability;
  • To identify challenges, propose solutions and create a safe space to think forward;
  • To develop a principled, and evidence-informed, approach to devising subsequent support and guidance for change(s) with regards to enhancing employability;
  • To develop a compendium of case studies that will help shape and inform the sector.

Call for papers

The call for papers is now open. Deadline for submission is 17:00 (GMT) on Friday 4 February 2022.

For #EmpSymp22, Advance HE’s fifth employability symposium, we are requesting a specific focus on employability initiatives that align to one or more of the following themes:

  • Sustainable development;
  • Inclusivity and equitable opportunities;
  • Interdisciplinary approaches;
  • Global Citizenship;
  • Co-design and partnership with students.

We are particularly keen to hear from colleagues where practices are sustained and there is clear evidence that practices are working. We want to recognise and promote good practice where employability is aligned to the curriculum, whether that be embedded or otherwise, bringing together cutting-edge examples of how sustainable and innovative approaches can be delivered at school, faculty/college and/or institutional levels where impact is shown over short, medium and wherever possible, the longer term. 

Proposals are welcomed from individuals or teams from across a single institution, or involving multiple institutions, and especially from individuals of underrepresented groups. Creative collaborations between academic teams, professional service teams and students are welcomed. The symposium aims to showcase a wide and diverse range of work, activities and creative practice.

Colleagues are invited to submit an abstract for either a 20-minute presentation or for a 40-minute workshop, as detailed below.

Presentations – Colleagues are asked to submit an abstract of between 150 and 200 words outlining the focus of the presentation and potential benefits to participants of attending. Please also provide a title and indicate how your abstract relates to one or more of the symposium themes (see above). Presentations are 20 minutes long and are to be structured to include 15 minutes ‘presentation time’ to leave sufficient opportunity for audience questions. We welcome presentation submissions from staff, students or a combination of the two.

Workshops – Colleagues are asked to submit an abstract of between 175 to 200 words. This should outline the focus of the workshop and activities to be included. Please provide a title, an explanation of activities to be included, participant ‘takeaways’ (i.e. what participants will gain from attending the workshop) and indicate how the workshop aligns to one or more of the symposium themes. Workshops are 40 minutes long.

Reviewing criteria:

Please note that all submissions (both presentations and workshops) will be reviewed according to the following criteria:

  • Relevance to symposium focus and themes;
  • Linkage to the broader employability landscape;
  • Clarity of overall message or argument; 
  • Reference to relevant academic/research literature.
