Advance HE’s Annual Teaching and Learning Conference 2019 positioned the spotlight firmly on teaching in a global context, in particular this year the conference explored innovation for teaching excellence focusing on innovative teaching practices and pedagogies and seeked to uncover new practice which demonstrates or contributes to teaching excellence and is improving the student experience.

As Wonkhe’s editor, Debbie has oversight of Wonkhe’s daily insight, debate and analysis of higher education policy. Debbie has previously worked in policy and communications roles at Universities UK, the University of Bedfordshire, and the National Union of Students. She holds a DPhil in English literature from the University of Oxford and a Masters in research in higher education policy, evaluation and enhancement from Lancaster University. Debbie is interested in bringing to light new and less-represented perspectives to inform policy and practice in higher education.

Diana Beech is Policy Adviser to Chris Skidmore MP, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation. She also served the previous Minister, Sam Gyimah, from August 2018. Prior to this, Diana was the first Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) – the UK’s only think tank exclusively devoted to HE – where she published reports on the TEF, demand for higher education to 2030, free speech in universities, and widening access and participation. Diana holds a PhD in German from the University of Cambridge and has held post-doctoral positions at universities in Canada, Germany and the UK. Diana has also been a governor at the University.

Joshua studied for his bachelors degree in Business at the University of Durham before joining the University of Law’s Manchester Campus in 2014 to study the Graduate Diploma in Law. Joshua went on to complete the Bar Professional Training Course at the University of Law’s Leeds Campus in 2016 before being appointed as Student Association President in 2017. His Presidency focused on student mental health and on building and strengthening the partnership between the university and the student association particularly around widening participation. Joshua was re-elected in 2018 in ULaw’s first contested presidential election.
Joshua has also sat on the Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) Panel as a student panellist and since 2018 have been chair of the GuildHE SU Network. He was appointed to the Office for Students Student Panel in 2019.
Last year's conference focused on Teaching in the Spotlight: Innovation for Teaching Excellence and will cover the following six themes:
- Interdisciplinary or multi-disciplinary innovation in teaching and learning practice
- Innovation in inclusive curricula
- Innovation in blended and immersive teaching and learning practice
- Innovative practice that aids transition and retention
- Innovation practice to support employability
- Innovative practice to enhance assessment and feedback

Annual Debate 2019
Following a highly entertaining debate at the 2018 conference, the 2019 conference will once again be holding an evening networking event that includes a drinks reception, a three-course meal and a parliamentary-style debate. The debate took place on the evening of 3 July 2019, and we will hear from four panellists, all respected professionals within the sector, who will debate a motion voted on by you.
Since the success of last year’s lively debate, we have been thrilled with the response to the selection of this year’s topic and we can now announce that the winning motion for the 2019 Annual Debate was:
"This house believes that the metrification of higher education is ruining the student experience"
We have introduced a new session that will allow delegates to have a 5-minute soapbox opportunity to showcase ideas for future collaborative projects. The sessions will take place between 3pm and 3.30pm in the Main Hall on day 1 of the conference on 2 July 2019.
This is your chance to find people working in similar areas to collaborate with, make connections with those who share your interests and make the most of the network of delegates attending the conference.
Dr Tim Young from UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology (IoN) is looking to collaborate with colleagues keen to increase student feedback participation rates through testing personalised email content.
Shakila Devi Perumal from Cardiff University is seeking partners to collaborate with in the investigation of the impact of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) technology in postgraduate curriculum design, assessment and feedback.
Jackie Cawkwell from The University of Nottingham is exploring how to extend engagement with CPD for teaching and learning support colleagues who contribute significantly to the student learning experience but who are excluded from targets.
Pauline Calleja from Griffith University is looking for partners interested in collaborating and contributing to a study using Artificial Intelligence methodology to collect information from large numbers of participants to better understand what can be done to support graduate nurses transition into their first year of practice.
