Get ready to teach with impact – online, on campus, and in hybrid spaces

This flexible online programme from Advance HE is designed for university staff who are new to teaching in higher education or want to build confidence in today’s dynamic learning environments. You’ll gain a strong foundation in inclusive, evidence-informed teaching practice while exploring current digital pedagogies and tools that help you support and engage students effectively, wherever and however they’re learning.

The programme is underpinned by Advance HE’s 2023 Professional Standards Framework and has been designed to nurture and develop contemporary professional learning, with a particular focus on the basics of effective teaching practice.

What to expect

New to Teaching is a six-week, fully online learning experience that blends live interactive sessions, flexible self-directed activities, and practical reflection. You’ll participate in individual, collaborative, and whole-cohort learning opportunities - all designed to help you grow as a confident, reflective educator.

Facilitated by a highly experienced team, the programme models approaches and activities which can be taken into HE teaching, positioning the participant as a learner and inviting them to reflect critically on the experiences in order to enhance their own teaching practices.

  • Duration: 6 weeks
  • Time commitment: approx. 4 hours per week
  • 2.5- hour weekly live session
  • 1- 2 hours of directed study and reflection
  • Format: 100% online with access to session recordings and resources for one month post-course

Programme at a glance

New to Teaching focuses on critical areas of practice for effectively engaging students, with the thread of technology-enhanced learning and teaching running throughout the programme. 

Week 1: Introduction to Learning and Teaching & Building Communities of Learners

Understand your teaching context and how to foster a sense of belonging in students, 21st century students’ motivations and approaches to learning and how AI can support learning.

Week 2: Planning Effective and Inclusive Learning Experiences

Discover how to design effective learning journeys, employ high-impact teaching practices and utilise AI to enhance your teaching.

Week 3: Inclusive Teaching Practice

Learn how to make learning content and learning environments accessible and engaging for all students and share digital technologies which support diverse student needs.

Week 4: Future-facing and Inclusive Assessment

Identify what effective, flexible, authentic assessment looks like, explore how to develop assessment that supports and promotes opportunities for learning and discuss strategies to encourage academic integrity in the digital age.

Week 5: Delivering Meaningful and Actionable Feedback

Explore strategies to develop students’ assessment literacy and engagement with feedback, learn how to create meaningful rubrics and practice strategies that ensure students engage with your feedback.

Week 6: Microteaching

Put it all into practice—design and deliver a short online teaching session with peer feedback and plan your new steps in professional development.

Vic is a Senior Consultant at Advance HE, designing and delivering support and training on inclusive pedagogy approaches and leading a range of collaborative projects to enhance quality, student experience and outcomes. She has over 25 years of experience in education as a teacher, teacher trainer, academic manager and assessment specialist. Vic’s main interests are in international education, inclusive curricula and assessment design and technology-enhanced learning.
