Constructing Engagement in Professional Development Planning in Higher Education

The challenge faced by academics is that students do not necessarily find employability skills development an easy process often regarding it as unimportant and unrelated to a 'real' subject discipline. This paper explores the challenges faced engaging students in analysing and developing their employability skills. A PDP module delivered to 140 retail and hospitality management students became the vehicle for an 18 month action research project.

Key words: Engagement employability PDP CPD

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the challenges faced by academics and present the critical factors that influenced student engagement and motivation within the Professional Development Planning (PDP) programme at Leeds Metropolitan University (LeedsMet).
