This presentation discusses a paper that investigates the 'writing group' as a pedagogical tool for addressing some challenges faced by international doctoral students. It explores issues of agency and identity (in which competency in academic English is implicated) that are bound up in competing notions of the purpose of doctoral work. An educational lens is applied to Sen's Capability Approach - in which opportunities to achieve enhance predetermined sets of skills and outcomes - to investigate learning transformation through capability development.
