Interventions for staff disclosure in higher education: background paper 2009

A range of interventions to contribute towards improving staff disclosure of equality information.

Equality data about staff enable higher education institutions to take steps to address diversity and equality issues in the structure of the workplace, to ensure they are preventing discrimination and to provide appropriate support services to staff.

However, many institutions have found it difficult to gather the relevant information and have met with staff reluctance to disclose equality information.

Building on research undertaken by Equality Challenge Unit and other organisations, and in consultation with the sector, this publication collects a range of interventions that contribute to improving staff disclosure of equality information relating to ethnicity, disability and sexual orientation.

The interventions look at the following areas:

  • Improving clarity on disclosure and data quality
  • Improving communication and engagement in disclosure and equality
  • Implementing equality in recruitment and retention
  • Achieving behaviour and culture change through developing supportive structures
