OER to support researcher development

This case study focuses on three different aspects of using and reusing OER to develop the researcher skills described by the RDF. Each of the projects detailed here covers a different area and application of OER: Investigating the potential of OER to develop flexible needs driven postgraduate research training describes the creation and release of online research methods resources in social sciences by methods@manchester. It highlights issues relating to copyright consent and awareness of 'open-ness' by producers and users. Skills Portal (University of Surrey) is a classified collection of repurposed OER mapped to the RDF. The intention of this development was to provide online resources to supplement workshops particularly for distance learners. Embedding Open Educational Resources in Research Methods Teaching in Education Social Science and Criminology is an action research project at Doncaster College which seeks to actively involve research methods tutors in the reuse of OER and evaluate the effects of this on student learning and engagement.

These case studies were created by SCORE (Support Centre for Open Resources in Education) fellows as part of the joint HEA / JISC Open Educational Resources study; pedagogical development from OER practice.
