This paper explores what Scottish Culture is if such a unified and singular thing actually exists and how new media is affecting it. The paper focuses on how new media affects Gaelic as a double edged sword: Gaelic and Gaelic art can now be easily transmitted globally but all sorts of other cultural media can be easily transmitted into the areas where Gaelic art is produced.
This paper was delivered at the HEA PALATINE True North: Teaching the music of the Highlands and Islands in Higher Education conference at Perth College UHI on 13th to 14th Jun 2007. The conference aimed to gain an understanding of the state of the Scottish music industry in particular rock/pop traditional and the fusions thereof and its current and potential relationship to higher education providers in the region and the UK as a whole. It explored the particular nature diversity threats and opportunities presented to Scottish and in particular Highlands and Islands musicians in the 21st century.
